Texas Trucking Accident Attorney Steve Laird:Higher Speed Limits Increase Peril to Texas Drivers

Fort Worth personal injury and trucking accident attorney Steven C. Laird of the Law Offices of Steven C. Laird tells The 33’s Dawn Tongish that new laws that increase speed limits in Texas will imperil drivers. “It takes about 250 feet for an 18-wheeler traveling at 55 mph to come to a stop,”Laird says. “We can only anticipate that there will be more danger to the traveling public when these speed limits are raised because the amount of visibility that 18-wheeler drivers have at night, due to their headlights, will not increase even though their speeds are going to be increasing.” Laird says that it’s likely the number of fatal accidents involving 18-wheelers will increase beyond the average of 400 per year in Texas when nighttime speed limits are eliminated and a new maximum speed limit of 85 mph is instituted in Texas starting in September.

Laird is Board Certified in Personal Injury Trial Law and Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He also is certified as a Civil Trial Law Specialist by the National Board of Trial Advocacy. Fewer than 1 percent of Texas’ lawyers are triple-board certified.
