Experienced Lawyers for Serious Cases

Legal Experience Verdicts and Settlements

The Law Offices of Steven C. Laird, P.C. has represented clients in verdicts and settlements that are significant based on the nature of the case, the level of financial compensation awarded or the beneficial operational changes made by defendants as a result of the litigation.  The firm is currently handling several significant cases, including cases involving trucking collisions and car wrecks involving serious injuries and deaths, as well as significant commercial matters.  The following outlines some of our experience:

  • A woman who lost both her son and father in a fatal 18 wheeler collision in Cook County asked us to represent her in a lawsuit against the trucking company. It was discovered that the truck driver had given false or misleading information to obtain his required medical certificate, and that it appeared he suffered from sleep apnea.
  • The family of a young man who was killed at a natural gas pumping station asked us to represent them. It was discovered that a contractor had incorrectly installed a relief pipe that sheared off and fatally struck the young man in Johnson County.
  • A wife and child requested our help in a jury trial after an 18 wheeler in Dallas caused a fatal collision that killed the husband and father. The truck had formed a roadblock across a street with it's trailer, and the driver fled the scene after the collision. It was discovered that neither the driver nor the safety director of the company had any training.
  • We represented an engineer who was the victim of electrical shock after a sailboat mast came in contact with an electrical wire hanging over a cove where the electrical company violated height regulations of electrical lines in a nearby county.
  • The family of an infant who was catastrophically injured by a medical worker retained the firm to represent them.  As a result of the facts presented in the case, the family received what was the largest single patient medical malpractice verdict for actual damages in Tarrant County history, and the largest verdict for loss of parent-child relationship damages in Texas history at that time.
  • The family of a military officer requested us to handle a case against the driver of an 18 wheeler which rear ended the officer, killing him upon impact. The case was tried to a jury in Waco, Texas.
  • A school district requested our representation in a case in which toxic substances had allegedly been dumped on school property by a contractor.
  • The family of a man killed in a defective crane accident at a construction site asked for our help. It was found that the crane had a defect that the manufacturer had been aware of but not corrected.
  • We were asked to represent the family of a couple in Missouri who were involved in a deadly collision there with an 18 wheeler. The truck driver was discovered to have falsified his log books to minimize rest time in violation of federal law.  The case was tried to a jury.
  • The family of a newborn who was a victim of medical neglect during delivery retained the firm to represent them.  Because of the circumstances involved, the family received one of the larges single patient medical malpractice settlements for actual damages in Tarrant County history.
  • We were requested to represent the family of a man who had a fatal collision with a garbage truck whose driver had no training and the truck had a broken gas gauge that the company had repeatedly failed to repair.
  • Due to insufficient safety procedures, improper training and negligence by a medical worker, a patient died when cleaning fluid was injected during dialysis.  In this case, the family of the victim received the largest malpractice verdict in Lamar County history.
  • The husband and young children of a young woman asked us to represent them in a case where she was given significant amounts of medication that resulted in respiratory depression and death while not being monitored.
  • The family of an 18 wheeler collision in central Florida asked for our representation when an 18 wheeler ran a red light, killing the father and causing brain damage to the mother of five children.
  • A young man in South Dakota asked us to represent him after a nurse incorrectly administered an anti-nausea drug, resulting in the loss of his arm.
  • A former City of Dallas employee alleged wrongful termination against the city and retained the firm.  The case marked the first time the City of Dallas was sued successfully outside of Dallas, and the judgment resulted in one of the largest amount of sanctions ever upheld on appeal in Texas history.
  • A young woman in Minneapolis asked the firm to represent her after she was rendered paraplegic when the epidural needle penetrated the spinal canal before delivery. The case resolved during trial.
  • A man requested us to represent him in a serious injury case after an 18 wheeler was passing in a no passing zone at a high rate of speed in Kaufman County.
  • A mother and father asked us to represent their family in another state after it appeared that the delivering doctor and nurse were negligent during their child's birth, causing permanent brain damage.

We believe that it is important that individuals and businesses continue to have full and unimpeded access to the courts and the justice system to resolve disputes and seek restitution for wrongful acts.  The laws governing these cases are a foundation of our society, helping assure a level of fair commerce, public health and safety that should be expected for every citizen.

The facts and results of each case will vary, and no particular result can be guaranteed.
